EU Digital Product Passport: what Bangladesh garment exporters need to prepare
The European Union is introducing a Digital Product Passport for textiles — a machine-readable record, reachable from the product itself, describing what a garment is made of, who made it, and what happens to it at end of life. For Bangladesh, whose largest apparel market is Europe, this becomes a condition of selling rather than a sustainability nicety.
This guide covers what the passport actually asks for, why most factories cannot produce it today, and what preparing for it looks like in practice.
What a Digital Product Passport is
A Digital Product Passport (DPP) is a structured data record attached to a product, usually reached by scanning a QR code or NFC tag on the garment or its label. It comes from the EU's Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), which names textiles as a priority product group.
The detailed requirements for textiles arrive through delegated acts. Textile DPP obligations are currently expected from 2029, and the EU's DPP Registry has been live since July 2026. Timelines in this area have moved before, so confirm the current position with your buyer rather than planning to the month.
The date that governs your work is earlier than the legal one in any case. European brands are already asking suppliers for this data, well ahead of the deadline, because they will need it and they know their supply chains cannot produce it yet.
The practical point for exporters: the deadline that matters is not the regulation's. It is the date your buyer starts asking — and for several European brands, that date has already passed.
What data the passport requires
The exact field list will be fixed by delegated act, but the shape is clear from the regulation and from what brands are already requesting. It falls into five groups:

Two things about that list are worth dwelling on. First, most of it already exists somewhere in a factory — in a tech pack, a lab report, a supplier declaration, a shipping document. Second, almost none of it exists in a form a machine can read.
Why most factories cannot produce it today
The obstacle is rarely that the data is missing. It is that the data is scattered, inconsistent, and unlinked.
It lives in documents, not fields
Fibre composition sits in a PDF tech pack. Chemical test results arrive as a scanned lab report. Supplier details are in an email thread. Each is readable by a person and opaque to a system. A passport needs a value in a field, not a sentence in an attachment.
The same thing is written five ways
"60% Cotton 40% Poly", "Cotton 60 / Polyester 40", "CO60/PES40" — all the same garment, all unusable together until someone normalises them. The same applies to country names, dates, units, and supplier names.
Nothing is linked to the order
A lab report is genuinely useful only when you know which style, which order and which shipment it belongs to. In most factories that link exists in somebody's memory, or in a filename. A passport is issued per product, so every document has to resolve to a product.
The chain stops one tier up
Factories usually know their direct fabric supplier. Fewer know the mill, and fewer still the fibre source. The passport asks about the chain, not the last link in it.
What preparing actually looks like
- Inventory what you already hold. Before buying anything, list which of the five groups above you can evidence today for a single style. Most factories are further along than they expect on composition and proof, and further behind on provenance.
- Fix the linking before the collecting. A thousand documents that cannot be tied to an order are worth less than fifty that can. Order number, style number and supplier need to be consistent identifiers, not free text.
- Normalise at the point of entry. Deciding once that composition is recorded as fibre plus percentage — and enforcing it — saves reprocessing every historical document later.
- Push one tier further up. Ask your fabric supplier who their mill is. This is the slowest part to fix and the hardest to retrofit, so start before a buyer asks.
- Pick one style and complete it end to end. A single garment with a genuinely complete passport teaches you more about your gaps than a partially-complete pass over your whole catalogue.
A caution on buying software first. A compliance platform can structure and link what you have, and show you what is missing. It cannot know your mill's name if nobody has ever asked. The supplier-engagement work is yours regardless of what you buy.
